CAF President Patrice Motsepe Explains Delay in Announcing 2024 WAFCON and 2025 AFCON Dates

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, has clarified the reasons behind the delay in announcing the dates for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The announcement of the dates came during CAF's executive committee meeting on Friday.

CAF has confirmed that the 2025 AFCON finals will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco. Additionally, Morocco will host the delayed 2025 WAFCON finals, scheduled to run from July 5 to July 26, 2025.

Motsepe expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming tournaments, highlighting the impressive growth of women’s football on the continent. “I am also impressed by the enormous growth of Women’s Football in Africa and I am expecting the CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 to be immensely successful,” Motsepe was quoted by CAFonline.

However, the announcement of the dates was not without its challenges. Motsepe explained that the process took longer than anticipated due to complex and sometimes difficult discussions with various stakeholders. “The announcement of the dates of the CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 took much longer than expected, as there were complex and at times challenging discussions with various interested parties, in light of the extensive International and Domestic Match Calendars,” he stated.

Motsepe emphasized CAF's commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of African players, particularly those playing in clubs across Europe and worldwide. This commitment played a significant role in the deliberations and eventual decisions regarding the tournament schedules.

The delay in announcing the dates underscores the intricate nature of organizing such large-scale events, which must take into account numerous factors including the international match calendar, domestic league schedules, and the logistics of hosting multiple nations. Balancing these elements is crucial to ensuring the successful execution of these prestigious tournaments.

Morocco's selection as the host for both the 2025 AFCON and WAFCON reflects the country's growing stature in African football. Morocco has demonstrated its capability to host major tournaments, having successfully organized previous CAF competitions. The double hosting duty further underscores Morocco's readiness and capacity to provide world-class facilities and experiences for players, officials, and fans alike.

The 2025 AFCON is particularly notable as it marks a return to a calendar year schedule, with the tournament spanning the end of one year and the beginning of the next. This timing is strategic, as it aims to minimize disruptions to domestic leagues and aligns with the international football calendar.

Meanwhile, the 2024 WAFCON will serve as a crucial platform for showcasing the talent and progress in women's football across Africa. With the tournament set to take place in Morocco, expectations are high for a competitive and well-organized event that continues to elevate the profile of women’s football on the continent.

The growth of women’s football in Africa is a focal point for CAF, and the successful execution of the WAFCON will be a testament to the strides being made in this area. The tournament will not only provide an opportunity for the best teams to compete for continental glory but also inspire a new generation of female footballers across Africa.

While the delay in announcing the dates for the 2024 WAFCON and 2025 AFCON may have caused some uncertainty, it highlights the complexities involved in organizing such significant events.

CAF's careful deliberation and eventual decision-making reflect a commitment to excellence and the interests of all stakeholders involved. As the preparations for these tournaments continue, the football community eagerly anticipates what promises to be spectacular showcases of African football talent and organization.
