Former England striker Chris Sutton has offered his predictions for the Euro 2024 Round of 16 matches, forecasting victories for Italy against Switzerland and Germany against Denmark.
The Italy-Switzerland match, set to be played in Berlin on Saturday, is expected to be a tough contest as both teams battle for a spot in the quarterfinals. Sutton, a former Chelsea player, believes Italy will edge out Switzerland in a close encounter.
"Switzerland ended up drawing with Germany in their final group game, but they were ahead for a long time, and it looked like they would top Group A," Sutton wrote in his column for the BBC. "I am going to go with Italy. They are the holders, and they found a way to get the result they needed against Croatia in their last match in Group B."
Sutton predicts a narrow 1-0 win for Italy, the reigning champions, adding, "I just have a feeling Italy will do the same here, and find a way to win, although it is going to be very close."
In the other Round of 16 clash, Sutton backs Germany to advance past Denmark. He acknowledges Germany's attacking prowess as a decisive factor in their favor.
"Speaking about Germany against Denmark, I am still backing the hosts to get through this one, though, because they have got enough attacking firepower to get past the Danes’ defence," he stated.
