Israeli PM Netanyahu Vows to Proceed with Controversial Military Operation in Gaza

Source: Daily Post

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his intention to carry out a highly anticipated military operation in the Gaza Strip city of Rafah, despite escalating tensions and domestic criticism.

Reportedly, Hamas claimed to hold fewer than 40 women, elderly, and ailing hostages, adding complexity to the situation.

Netanyahu, facing mounting scrutiny over his management of the ongoing conflict against Hamas, emphasized the necessity of achieving "complete victory" over the jihadist group, stating that it requires the entry into Rafah and the elimination of terrorist battalions stationed there.

In a video message posted online, the 74-year-old Prime Minister asserted, "It will happen, there is a date," though he refrained from providing specific details regarding the operation.

Truce negotiations between Israeli and Hamas officials in Cairo persisted, with CIA Director Bill Burns reportedly proposing a humanitarian exchange. Burns suggested that Hamas submit a list of 40 Israeli hostages who could potentially be released in exchange for a six-week cease-fire.

Israeli media outlet Channel 12 reported Hamas's response, indicating that the organization was attempting to negotiate the release of fewer hostages, citing logistical constraints. Hamas claimed it lacked the capacity to release the initially requested 40 abductees, leading to discussions about adjusting the terms of the proposed exchange.

As tensions continue to escalate in the region, Netanyahu's unwavering commitment to the military operation underscores the complexities and challenges inherent in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaged in delicate negotiations aimed at achieving a temporary cessation of hostilities.
