Namibia Mourns as President Hage Geingob Passes Away at 82

In a somber announcement, Namibia's Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba revealed that President Hage Geingob passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning while undergoing medical treatment in Windhoek.

The 82-year-old leader, who had bravely disclosed his battle with cancer last month, was surrounded by his family, including his wife Madame Monica Geingos and children.

President Geingob, in office since 2015 and serving his second and final term, had recently undergone an aortic operation, adding to his health challenges. Despite his resilience, the announcement of his passing marks the end of an era for Namibia, a nation he served during a crucial period.

Last year, the late president had revealed surviving prostate cancer, showcasing his determination to continue leading the country despite health setbacks. His commitment extended to announcing plans to travel to the US for treatment, with a scheduled return to Namibia on February 2.

As Namibia prepares for presidential and parliamentary elections in November, the governing Swapo party faces a significant transition. Mrs. Nandi-Ndaitwah, currently Namibia’s deputy prime minister, has been selected as the Swapo party's presidential candidate.

If successful, she would become Namibia’s first female president, succeeding President Geingob and continuing his legacy.

The passing of President Hage Geingob leaves a void in Namibia's political landscape, prompting reflection on his contributions and the path ahead for the nation.
