The reasons behind Ghanaians celebrating Adwoa Safo and Alex Mensah's loss in NPP primaries

Ghanaians Celebrate Adwoa Safo and Alex Mensah's Primary Loss

In the most recent New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, Sarah Adwoa Safo and Alex Mensah, a former commissioner of police, were defeated, and the people of Ghana celebrated wildly.

All the excitement is based on the fact that Ghanaians decided to punish the candidates at the elections due to a number of scandals and accusations of wrongdoing, including their haughtiness and other traits.

Outrage Over Adwoa Safo's Two-Year Absence

The current member of parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya constituency in the Greater Accra Region and former minister of gender, children, and social protection, Sarah Adwoa Safo, came under heavy criticism for stepping away from her parliamentary responsibilities and the people of her constituency for nearly two years.

President Akufo Addo finally removed her from her ministerial role in July 2022, following multiple demands for her dismissal and the fruitless attempts by the NPP and its caucus to reassign her to parliament.

Adwoa Safo further infuriated Ghanaians when she shared a video on social media while she was abroad. Some saw her dancing and singing as a taunt to her constituents, while others saw it as an expression of regret for her long absence.

Her heroic efforts to make amends with the Dome-Kwabenya residents, which included purchasing and distributing yogurt, were ultimately fruitless.

Adwoa Safo tried to win back her irate constituents a few months before the parliamentary primary, but they were unmoved and saw voting for her as an insult. On election day, she lost to Mike Oquaye Jr., her longtime rival.

The Controversial Audio Scandal Involving COP Alex Mensah

A leaked audio scandal caused public wrath towards Alex Mensah, the retired commissioner of police. In order to sway the 2024 elections in favor of the NPP, he and others were caught on tape conspiring to depose Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police.

When Mensah appeared before the legislative ad hoc committee that was looking into the scheme, he showed no shame, boasted about what he had done, and revealed that he was affiliated with the NPP.

In spite of widespread outrage at his statements and actions, Mensah fearlessly announced his decision to run for the Ashanti region's Bekwai seat. Ghanaians perceived his defeat in the legislative primaries as a rejection of his haughtiness and immorality, which had already infuriated them.

A lot of people in Ghana were talking about how the defeat of Adwoa Safo and COP Alex Mensah in the NPP parliamentary primaries was a slap in the face to the Ghanaian people's intelligence.
