Tiwa Savage Reflects on Early Career Criticisms and Expresses Support for Ayra Starr

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the heavy criticism she faced early in her career due to her "sexy" fashion style and "risky" lyrics. In a recent interview with Kiss FM, UK, Savage shared her experiences and expressed her admiration for fellow Nigerian artist Ayra Starr.

Savage recounted how she was often criticized for her bold fashion choices and provocative lyrics when she was starting out in the music industry. Despite the backlash, she remained true to herself and continued to push boundaries.

Reflecting on her early days, Savage said, "When I started, I got criticized a lot for dressing too sexy and my lyrics being too risky. It was tough because I was just trying to be myself and express my creativity. But there were many people who thought I was going too far."

Her experience has made her particularly supportive of Ayra Starr, who has also faced criticism for her fashion sense. Savage revealed that she is "obsessed" with Starr and admires her resilience and success on the global music scene.

"I love Ayra [Starr]. I’m obsessed with her. She’s amazing and genuine, too. It makes me emotional because when I started, I got criticized a lot for dressing too sexy and my lyrics being too risky," Savage said.

She continued, "Seeing someone like Ayra now, if I see her wearing the short skirts as they [critics] say, I’m like, ‘Make it shorter.’ And she looks amazing, she’s extremely talented. Yeah, she’s a star."

Savage emphasized the importance of supporting and uplifting other artists who face similar challenges. "It's important for us to support each other, especially as women in the industry. We need to encourage each other to be bold and unapologetic about who we are."

The Nigerian music scene has seen a significant shift in recent years, with more female artists emerging and challenging traditional norms. Savage's success has paved the way for many, including Ayra Starr, who continue to push boundaries and redefine what it means to be a female artist in Nigeria.

Ayra Starr, known for her unique style and powerful lyrics, has quickly risen to prominence in the music industry. Despite facing criticism, she has remained confident and continues to captivate audiences with her music.

Savage's support for Starr highlights the importance of embracing individuality and pushing back against societal norms that seek to limit artistic expression. Both artists serve as inspirations for many, demonstrating that staying true to oneself can lead to success despite criticism.

Savage concluded by expressing her hope for the future of the music industry, "I hope we continue to see more diversity and acceptance in the industry. It's important for artists to feel free to express themselves without fear of judgment. Ayra Starr is a perfect example of that, and I couldn't be prouder of her."

The bond between Savage and Starr represents a broader movement within the industry, where established artists are mentoring and supporting the next generation. This solidarity not only strengthens the music community but also encourages more young artists to pursue their dreams without fear of criticism.
