Tomas Soucek on Facing Portugal: "It's Not Just Cristiano"

Czech Republic captain Tomas Soucek has said that he is aware that Cristiano Ronaldo is not Portugal’s singular threat as both countries prepare to clash in the Euro 2024 tournament on Tuesday.

Soucek highlighted other key Portuguese players who could pose significant challenges for his team in their group opener in Leipzig. The 39-year-old Ronaldo is chasing history at this year’s tournament, aiming to make a record-extending sixth appearance and score in a sixth different edition.

Ronaldo is coming off a strong 2023–24 season with Al-Nassr, where he scored a total of 50 goals across competitions. However, Soucek emphasized that Portugal's threats are not limited to Ronaldo alone.

Soucek acknowledged the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, and Bernardo Silva as other crucial players to watch out for. Speaking to O Jogo, Soucek said, “It’s not just Cristiano. Fernandes, Leão, Silva, players who are very, very good. Not only when talking about attack, but also about defence. We know this and we are focused on us.”

Soucek also mentioned that despite being the underdogs, the Czech Republic would fancy their chances against a Portugal side that went a perfect 10/10 during the qualifying series. "We know this and we are focused on us," he added, indicating that his team is preparing diligently to face the formidable Portuguese side.

Portugal's squad is filled with talent across the board. Bruno Fernandes has been a standout performer for Manchester United, showcasing his playmaking abilities and scoring important goals. Rafael Leao, with his speed and dribbling skills, has become a key player for AC Milan, while Bernardo Silva's versatility and creativity have been crucial for Manchester City.

For Portugal, having multiple players who can create and finish opportunities makes them a dynamic and unpredictable team. Ronaldo's presence undoubtedly adds an extra layer of threat, but the collective strength of the squad is what makes them one of the favorites for the tournament.

The Czech Republic, under Soucek’s leadership, will look to leverage their own strengths and strategy to counter Portugal's multi-faceted attack. Soucek, who has been a vital player for West Ham United, brings a combination of defensive solidity and aerial prowess, which will be crucial in both defending against and attacking Portugal.

Soucek's comments reflect a realistic yet optimistic approach. Recognizing the quality of the opposition is the first step in preparing adequately for the match. By focusing on their own game plan and strengths, the Czech Republic aims to capitalize on any opportunities that arise during the game.

The match against Portugal is expected to be a challenging encounter for the Czech Republic, but also a chance to test themselves against one of the best teams in Europe. Soucek’s leadership on the field will be pivotal in organizing his team and ensuring they remain focused and resilient throughout the match.

As Euro 2024 progresses, the group stages will provide crucial insights into which teams are best equipped to advance to the knockout rounds. For Portugal, a strong start with contributions from their star players, including Ronaldo, Fernandes, Leao, and Silva, will be essential in setting the tone for their campaign.

Tomas Soucek’s acknowledgment of Portugal's comprehensive threat underscores the depth and quality of the Portuguese squad. While Cristiano Ronaldo remains a key figure, the presence of other top players like Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, and Bernardo Silva highlights the multifaceted nature of Portugal's strength. As the Czech Republic prepares to face this formidable opponent, Soucek’s leadership and strategic focus will be crucial in navigating this challenging fixture.
