Wayne Rooney Criticizes Southgate for Leaving Henderson Out of Euro 2024 Squad

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has suggested that England manager Gareth Southgate made a mistake by not including Jordan Henderson in the squad for Euro 2024. Southgate’s decision to leave Henderson out of the final 26-man England squad has sparked debate, with Rooney being one of the prominent voices questioning the move.

Rooney expressed his concerns while emphasizing that Southgate might regret the exclusion of Henderson, particularly in light of his decision to deploy full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield as an experiment. "That is a strong word to say and if England don’t go far in this competition, I think he [Southgate] might regret that," Rooney was quoted by Metro UK as saying.

Rooney highlighted Henderson's leadership qualities and experience as crucial elements that the current England squad lacks. "There is a lack of experience in the team and voices. When you are going to press, you need to talk. I would have taken Jordan Henderson because he is a voice. Harry Kane is not a big talker," Rooney added.

Henderson, known for his leadership on and off the pitch, has been a pivotal figure for both Liverpool and the England national team. His experience in major tournaments and ability to organize and motivate teammates is something Rooney believes is irreplaceable. Rooney’s remarks suggest that Henderson’s presence could have been vital for maintaining on-field communication and providing guidance to younger players.

Southgate’s decision to experiment with Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role has also come under scrutiny. While Alexander-Arnold is renowned for his attacking prowess and creativity from the right-back position, his adaptation to a midfield role remains uncertain. Rooney’s comments imply that such an experiment might not compensate for the loss of a seasoned midfielder like Henderson.

The decision to leave Henderson out comes at a time when the England squad is facing increased pressure to perform well at Euro 2024. The team’s previous performances in international tournaments have raised expectations, and any shortfall in the upcoming competition will likely lead to criticism of Southgate's selections and strategies.

Rooney’s critique brings to light the broader issue of balancing youth and experience in international squads. While fresh talent is essential for the team’s future, the experience and composure of seasoned players are invaluable during high-stakes tournaments. Henderson’s leadership, coupled with his ability to manage the game’s tempo and his understanding of international football’s demands, could have provided a stabilizing influence.

As the tournament progresses, Southgate's choices will be under intense scrutiny. If England fails to achieve their targets, questions about Henderson’s omission and the overall squad composition will resurface, potentially validating Rooney’s concerns.

Wayne Rooney’s comments about Gareth Southgate’s decision to exclude Jordan Henderson from the Euro 2024 squad underline a significant debate about the importance of experience in international football.

Henderson’s leadership and experience are seen by many, including Rooney, as vital components that could have bolstered England’s chances in the tournament. As England navigates through Euro 2024, the effectiveness of Southgate’s squad choices, including the midfield experiment with Trent Alexander-Arnold, will be critical in determining the team's success. If the absence of a seasoned leader like Henderson becomes evident, Southgate may indeed face regret, as Rooney suggests.
