Kobbie Mainoo Must Start for England in Euro 2024 Round of 16 - Gary Neville

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has voiced his opinion that Kobbie Mainoo should start in England’s midfield for their Euro 2024 Round of 16 tie on Sunday.

England's final Group C game against Slovenia on Tuesday was another disjointed performance. The match ended in a goalless draw in Germany, but the result was sufficient for the Three Lions to finish top of the group.

Gareth Southgate’s side will face one of Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, or Belgium in their first game of the last-16 on Sunday.

Neville expressed his views on ITV, stating, “I’m certain Mainoo will start in the next game [on Sunday]. He [Southgate] thought Gallagher may be the option, obviously, for the energy we talked about before the game. But I think it was quite obvious that we need someone in there who would get us playing, and Mainoo does that. I think Wharton is capable of that as well.”

Reflecting on the performance against Slovenia, Neville was critical of the team's display, especially in the first half. “We looked so basic in the first half [against Slovenia], it was a struggle to watch that. It moved forward a lot in the second half, we didn’t get the result but there were glimpses of what it can be.”

Neville’s recommendation for Mainoo to start highlights the young midfielder’s ability to control the game and enhance England's playing style. Mainoo, known for his composure on the ball and creative passing, could be the key to unlocking England’s potential in the knockout stages.

The call for a more dynamic and effective midfield comes after England's struggles in the group stage. While they managed to secure the top spot, their performances have been far from convincing. Neville's suggestion indicates a need for a fresh approach to ensure a stronger showing in the knockout rounds.

Southgate has shown trust in younger players throughout his tenure, and introducing Mainoo into the starting lineup could provide the spark that England needs. The inclusion of Mainoo could also bring balance to the midfield, providing both defensive stability and offensive creativity.

As England prepares for the Round of 16, the focus will be on how Southgate sets up his team. The potential opponents—Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, or Belgium—will pose different challenges, and having a player like Mainoo, who can adapt and influence the game, could be crucial.

Neville’s comments also reflect a broader concern among fans and pundits about England’s style of play. The lackluster performances in the group stage have raised questions about the team’s ability to compete against stronger opponents. Integrating Mainoo could address some of these concerns by adding a new dimension to England’s midfield play.

The former Manchester United captain’s insights carry significant weight, given his experience and understanding of the game. His endorsement of Mainoo suggests that there is a strong belief in the young player’s potential to make a substantial impact.

As the countdown to the Round of 16 clash continues, all eyes will be on Southgate’s team selection and tactical approach. The inclusion of Mainoo could be a bold move, but one that might pay off in ensuring England’s progression in the tournament.

Gary Neville’s call for Kobbie Mainoo to start in England’s midfield underscores the need for a more dynamic and effective playing style as the team heads into the Euro 2024 knockout stages. Mainoo’s abilities could provide the balance and creativity needed to enhance England’s performances and secure their place in the later stages of the competition. As England gears up for their crucial match on Sunday, the potential inclusion of Mainoo offers hope for a more cohesive and inspired display.
