Wayne Rooney Criticizes Gareth Southgate's Tactics at Euro 2024

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has criticized England manager Gareth Southgate for his handling of certain players during the group stage of Euro 2024. Rooney claims that Southgate "killed" Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher by misusing them in midfield before quickly discarding them.

England entered the tournament with high hopes of winning their first major trophy in men’s football since 1966. However, the Three Lions struggled in the group stage, managing only a labored 1-0 win over Serbia and failing to beat Denmark and Slovenia.

Southgate's tactics have come under scrutiny, with many questioning his decisions. Rooney voiced his concerns, saying, "None of what happened in the group stage surprised me. I would never have played Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield and expected that, when the experiment didn’t work, Gareth would try Conor Gallagher."

Rooney believes that Southgate’s decisions negatively impacted the players' confidence and performance. "Gareth killed both a bit by discarding them, but in each case, it was the right call," Rooney continued. "When Mainoo came in, you saw him making forward runs and showing composure on the ball."

Rooney also praised certain players, highlighting their suitability for international football. "Palmer? He is just suited to international football. He can take the ball, he’s calm on it and has the personality you need on that stage. Gordon is more direct than the other two and ensures there is a good blend," Rooney told the UK Times.

Southgate's decision to play Alexander-Arnold and Gallagher in unfamiliar midfield roles was seen as an attempt to inject creativity and dynamism into England’s play. However, the experiment backfired, leading to lackluster performances and leaving both players struggling to find their rhythm.

The pressure on Southgate has intensified as England moves into the knockout stages. Fans and pundits alike are concerned about the team’s tactical approach and player utilization. Rooney’s comments have added to the growing debate about Southgate’s management style and decision-making process.

Rooney's criticism reflects a broader sentiment among England supporters who are frustrated with the team’s inconsistent performances. The former England captain’s perspective carries weight given his extensive experience and success on the international stage.

As England prepares for the next phase of Euro 2024, Southgate faces the challenge of regaining the trust of his players and the confidence of the fans. His ability to adapt and make effective tactical adjustments will be crucial in determining the team’s success in the tournament.

The criticism from a high-profile figure like Rooney highlights the scrutiny that Southgate is under. The England manager will need to carefully consider his strategy and player selection moving forward to avoid further backlash and ensure that the team performs to its potential.

Wayne Rooney’s comments about Gareth Southgate's tactics at Euro 2024 underscore the challenges and criticisms facing the England manager.

The mishandling of players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Gallagher has raised questions about Southgate’s decision-making. As the tournament progresses, Southgate must address these issues to lead England to success and meet the high expectations of fans and pundits.
