Van Gaal Urges Manchester United to Back Ten Hag

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has publicly urged the club to retain current head coach Erik ten Hag, advocating for more time to allow him to succeed at Old Trafford. Despite Ten Hag's uncertain future at the club, Van Gaal believes that the Dutchman deserves continued support.

Erik ten Hag, who led Manchester United to an FA Cup victory last season, has faced speculation about his potential departure this summer. Despite these rumors, Van Gaal emphasized the importance of patience and long-term vision for the club’s management.

“Yes, of course he should stay, but I also needed more time. I also won the FA Cup, and before me, 20 years nobody had won the FA Cup. Erik is winning the FA Cup, the first year also (qualifying for the) Champions League, so I don’t think you have to sack him. He needs more time,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

Van Gaal, who managed Manchester United from July 2014 to May 2016, drew parallels between his tenure and Ten Hag’s situation. He highlighted that he too needed more time to fully implement his vision for the club. Van Gaal’s tenure saw the club win the FA Cup, a feat that had not been achieved by the club in the two decades prior to his arrival.

The former manager acknowledged that while Ten Hag’s performance has not been flawless, his achievements thus far demonstrate his potential and capability as a manager. “But I can also be more critical. He’s not done it fantastically, you can be with a lot of criticism, but he’s also shown he’s a good manager,” Van Gaal added.

The call for patience is particularly significant given the historical context of Manchester United’s managerial appointments. Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, the club has seen a series of managerial changes, each struggling to replicate the sustained success of Ferguson’s era. Van Gaal’s appeal for continuity and support suggests a recognition that stability is crucial for building a successful team.

Erik ten Hag’s first season at Manchester United saw the team securing the FA Cup and qualifying for the Champions League. These accomplishments are seen as positive steps in the right direction, yet the constant scrutiny and high expectations at Manchester United mean that even these achievements are often met with intense analysis and criticism.

Van Gaal’s comments come at a crucial time for Ten Hag, who faces the dual pressures of immediate performance and long-term team development. The support of a former manager, who understands the unique challenges of managing a club of Manchester United’s stature, could be influential in shaping the narrative around Ten Hag’s tenure.

Ten Hag's tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent were key reasons for his appointment. His success with Ajax, where he developed a team capable of competing at the highest levels in Europe, was seen as a blueprint for what he could achieve at Manchester United. However, transitioning those successes to the Premier League, with its distinct challenges and competitive environment, requires time and patience.

The FA Cup victory under Ten Hag’s leadership was a significant achievement, marking a successful start to his tenure. However, the constant demand for success at Manchester United means that he must continue to deliver positive results to secure his position. Van Gaal’s plea for more time reflects a broader understanding of the managerial role and the need for a long-term approach to rebuilding and sustaining success.

Louis van Gaal’s public support for Erik ten Hag underscores the importance of patience and stability in football management.

Van Gaal’s own experience at Manchester United lends weight to his argument that Ten Hag should be given more time to build his vision for the club. As Manchester United navigates its future, the call for continuity and support could prove crucial in achieving the long-term success that fans and the club aspire to.
